Avtec, Alaska's Institute Of Technology

Hands-on, project-based learning is what Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) in Seward, Alaska prides itself on. Another great thing about AVTEC is that those who need and qualify for financial aid may receive certain departmental scholarships in addition to loans. There are also tuition waiver or assistance plans for veterans and members of other populations. Students at AVTEC train for some high-demand professions such as welding, plumbing, practical nursing and cooking and baking. AVTEC also has a maritime science academy. The maritime science training is ideal for those who intend to remain in Alaska and earn their living working along the Alaskan coastline. What’s great about an AVTEC education is that students actually make and build and undertake work and projects in their field of study. A maritime student will actually navigate a boat at sea, a nursing student will work with patients and those in cooking and baking prepare meals for the school cafeteria. AVTEC students have access along the way to a lot of support including mentoring, advising, tutoring and career development and job placement services. Student life provides recreational and athletic activities to give hard-working students the chance to unwind after class. Admission is limited to Alaskan residents, though others may gain admittance on a space-available basis. Applicants must be at least 18 and have proof of a high school diploma or GED.
