Banca Romaneasca was set up in 1992 as a universal commercial bank, with an entirely private share capital, gradually widening its range of products and services so as to meet the needs of its business partners. Starting September 1996, the bank has become the first Western Union Financial Services international agent in Romania. For the first time in Romania, a bank was involved in electronic money transfer services worldwide. In 1996, the bank offered these services through 6 locations, now being offered through 176 locations in the entire country. Prudential management is highlighted by the initiative of the bank's top management to sign a group of insurance policies, on the London insurance market, the Lloyd's of London, starting from 1997. Consequently, Banca Romaneasca was the first Romanian bank insured by BBB, computer crime and D&O policies. In 1999, the Romanian American Enterprise Fund took over the majority stake, the Bank setting up very good partnerships with the financial institutions for providing support to the Romanian enterprises. In October 2003, the National Bank of Greece acquired an 81.65% stake of Banca Romaneasca from the Romanian American Enterprise Fund, thus becoming the main shareholder. The incorporation of the bank in the NBG Group represented one of the most significant stages in the history of Banca Romaneasca and guaranteed the Bank's prominent market position and long-term strategic development. Banca Romaneasca has constantly improved its range of products and services in order to develop its activity, to attract new clients and to make loyal the existing ones through promotion campaigns and competitive products. In order to increase its customer base, Banca Romaneasca implemented a network development program so, at present, it operates a network made up of 109 territorial units and 5 business centers, offering high quality services for its clients. The policy of the bank is to enhance the distribution channels of the services and products and to permanently improve its activity, maintaining in the same time a prudent approach in terms of risk.
