Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles, California, trains physicians and other medical professionals to work in underserved, urban environments. Charles R. Drew was originally established to provide medical care for those living in the South Central region of Los Angeles and is still committed to that mission. Training medical doctors in various capacities, Charles R. Drew offers specializations in such areas as Anesthesiology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery among others. Charles R. Drew also offers non-medical degrees related to health sciences and professions. These include a master’s in Urban Public Health and degrees in Radiology, Phlebotomy, Nursing and Life Sciences. Home to cutting-edge research, Charles Drew has received grants for and conducted research in the field of racial disparities in medical treatment. They have also conducted much HIV-related research and also offer training for clinicians who treat HIV-positive patients. Research related to diabetes, treatment of the elderly and cancer are also conducted at Charles Drew. Health clinics that offer free medical services, counseling, psychiatric services and substance abuse treatment all make their home on the Charles R. Drew Campus. Not only providing health services to minorities and the impoverished, Charles R. Drew also offers a medical training program for those from disenfranchised backgrounds. The Pipeline Program, as it’s called, is unique and innovative. Starting students in science-based and medical education when they are in elementary school, the Pipeline Program trains students at a young age so that by the time they reach college they will have the academic and scientific foundations necessary to pursue a medical career. Student services at Charles Drew include financial aid for eligible students, counseling services, housing options, student health services, academic advising, student government as well as numerous professional and academic student clubs and orgnaizations.
