GreenSand Corporation plans to recover a residual industrial copper-containing mineral waste called stamp sand that is located on the Lake Superior shoreline in Gay, Michigan for use as roofing shingle granules, fillers for building materials, underlayment material for construction projects and road aggregate. The end product is branded as G-SandTM. Its unique advantages include dimensional characteristics, copper content and accessibility in sufficient quantity that makes it a valuable substitute for other mineral products that are used in the roofing and other industries. Over 90 million tons are estimated in the contracted site. GreenSand Corporation became aware of a new classification of fine aggregates being developed in the State of Illinois at its Department of Transportation in early 2010. This new FA-22 (Fine Aggregate) designation reflects the State’s desire to decrease aggregate “fines” and increase particle size within the fine aggregate class of materials. Reducing fines content within HMA (Hot Mix Asphalt) mix designs increases strength and durability.
