ISEL is a higher education institution recognized in the market for producing engineers with high technical competence with the ability to combine knowledge with know-how. It represents a milestone of engineering education in the country, with continually evolving skills and in accordance with the development of engineering worldwide. Lisbon Higher Institute of Engineering (ISEL) is one of the oldest engineering schools in Portugal. It had its genesis on December 30, 1852, and by Royal Decree D. Maria II was created with the designation of Industrial Institute of Lisbon. This Institute now has higher education status under the name of Higher Institute of Engineering of Lisbon, by Decree-Law 830/74 of 31 December. As a non-integrated university, where only bachelor degree courses in engineering were taught, ISEL is integrated on 25 October 1988 by Decree-Law 389/88 in a network of polytechnic higher education institutions, the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon. It was with this underlying guideline that, in 1989/90, ISEL launched a new gamble by creating, under a new Education Act, Specialized Higher Studies Courses (EESC), leading to the degree of Bachelor, in very specific areas and with impact on the industrial sector. Following the changes made to the law in 1997, ISEL has also awarded the degree of Licensee. With the legislative changes resulting from the Bologna process and with the recognition of its own competences and capacities, in 2007 ISEL obtained authorization to award the master's degree. ISEL is legally defined as a legal person governed by public law, with statutory, scientific, pedagogical, administrative, financial, disciplinary and patrimonial autonomy. ISEL, being one of the oldest engineering education institutions in Portugal, has shown remarkable internal growth, both in the educational offer.
