The Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) was created, just over 40 years ago, from the transformation of the Rural Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul composed by the centenary Faculty of Agronomy Eliseu Maciel, Faculty of Veterinary and the Faculty of Home Sciences - and the annexation of the Faculties of Law and Dentistry, then linked to the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Private institutions, which already existed in Pelotas, were also added to UFPel, as is the case of the Pelotas Music Conservatory, Dona Carmem Trápaga Simões School of Fine Arts, the Medical School of the Southern Pro-Higher Education Institute, and the Viscount of Graça Agrotechnical Ensemble (CAVG). ). The agrarian area, of great importance for the development of the region, of predominantly agropastoral economy, had the important contribution of the Agricultural Engineering and Meteorology courses.
