At Wilkes Community College, you can get highly specialized career training and employment skills or begin work on your bachelor’s before transferring to University of North Carolina. Wilkes has two campus locations for maximum accessibility and even offers some courses free of charge. Wilkes Community College has one campus in Ashe, North Carolina, and one in nearby Alleghany. Both centers offer an equal number of academic and professional opportunities. Examples of professional associate’s degree programs include: * Baking and Pastry Arts * Dental Assisting * Graphic Design * Nursing Another career pathway available at Wilkes is continuing education. Non-credit continuing education courses train students for such occupations as: * Arborist * Emergency Medical Technician * Massage Therapist * Pharmacy Technician * Real Estate Wilkes students may also receive an Associate of Arts degree, which fulfills all of the general education requirements for a four-year degree. Students on this track usually transfer to a four-year college or university like the University of North Carolina. Wilkes provides comprehensive financial aid, which includes need-based federal and institutional grants and loans. Wilkes also awards need-based and academic scholarships. Finally, through the Pathways to Employment program, unemployed or underemployed students receiving short-term career certification may qualify for a complete tuition waiver. Wilkes has an open admissions policy, which means that anyone who is at least 18 years old and has a high school diploma or GED may enroll. Submission of an application and transcripts are required of all applicants. All entering students must also take a placement exam. Certain programs, such as Nursing, may have additional admissions requirements.
